Music/Pet Therapy
Music Ministry
Music Ministry is a service offered to our patients through our Spiritual Care Department. With financial support from our Foundation, we have a harpist as well as a bi-lingual vocalist who is also a trained social worker visiting patients on campus three days a week. Both the harpist and vocalist bring great comfort to our patients and their families. Music therapy has been proven to assist in the management of stress and pain in patients with advanced chronic illnesses successfully. Music therapy sessions provide opportunities for:
- Stress reduction and alleviating anxiety.
- Managing pain and discomfort.
- Lifting emotions and mood.
- Encouraging active and positive participation in treatment.
- Decreasing the length of a hospital stay.
- Relaxation for everyone in a family unit when illness may have caused stress.
Pet Therapy
The second healing program is our Pet Therapy Program, which began in 2021 through a partnership with volunteers from Inland Empire Therapy Dogs. We currently have five human and 6 furry volunteers. Initially these furry friends were brought in as a way of supporting our staff during COVID, they now visit with patients in addition to staff, and the joy is palpable when they are here. Pet therapy has been found to have several benefits, reducing stress, promoting healing, lowering blood pressure, and lifting the spirits of patients as well as our essential healthcare workers. In addition, pet therapy provides a distraction from procedures or boredom and increases comfort while decreasing anxiety. According to the Alliance of Therapy Dogs, benefits include increased socialization, lower stress or anxiety, higher levels of engagement and communication.
Our next step is to build upon both the Music Ministry and Pet Therapy programs increasing the frequency in which these services are offered to our patients. At this time, we are currently seeking support for these special programs.
